All About Homeopathy and Homeopathic Medicine

What Does Homeopathic Mean?

The word homeopathy comes from two Greek words that essentially mean “like disease.” Thus, the practice of homeopathic medicine is built around the idea that in order to treat a disease, small doses of substances that cause that disease will help treat it. According to The American Institute of Homeopathy, the homeopathic medicine definition is based on three principles: likes cure likes, the minimum dose, and the single remedy.

The Three Principles of Homeopathy

Likes Cure Likes
This idea has its origins with the Greek Father of Medicine, Hippocrates, around the year 400 B.C. Samuel Hahnemann, in 1796, further explored the concept and he is the one credited with formalizing the practice of homeopathy. Hahnemann used “provings” on himself and other healthy volunteers to determine homeopathic “pictures” and remedies.

The Minimum Dose
The principle of the minimum dose has to do with the idea of potentization. Hahnemann found that full strength herbs produced side effects in patients. In order to reduce the side effects, he diluted his homeopathic medicines numerous times to the point where there was no discernible chemical substance remaining. According to The American Institute of Homeopathy, the higher the dilution, the more powerful the homeopathic treatment.

The Single Remedy
The concept of the single remedy means that homeopathy doctors administer only one remedy at a time. This allows for the effects of the medicine to be observed without the concern that the effects might be the result of a different medicine (if more than one were to be given simultaneously). The single remedy principle allows them to determine if the one specific remedy is having positive effects.

Holistic Healing and Natural Ingredients
In addition to what has been explained above regarding the homeopathy definition and how homeopathy works, there are a few more concepts that come into the conversation on homeopathy. The first is that homeopathy, or homeopathic medicine, takes a holistic healing approach. This means that it takes into account the patient as a whole instead of focusing solely on one specific ailment. Second, homeopathy typically uses natural sources that tend to work with the body instead of against it. Homeopathy may provide symptomatic relief, but it is really about overall health as well.
