Lichen Planus Treatment, Causes, and Symptoms
About Lichen Planus
Lichen planus is a long-term skin condition and autoimmune disease. Lichen planus is an inflammatory skin disease that can affect your skin and mucous membranes. On the skin, lichen planus usually appears as purplish, often itchy, flat-topped bumps. In your mouth, cheeks, gums, tongue vagina and other areas covered by a mucous membrane, lichen planus commonly forms lacy white patches, sometimes with painful sores or ulcers. Lichen planus occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks cells of the skin or mucous membranes. The causes for this abnormal immune response are unknown, but patients with hepatitis C or who are taking medications for heart disease have been known to be more at risk for contracting lichen planus. Lichen planus is fairly common as far as skin diseases are concerned, but it is not contagious.
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENTS FOR LICHEN PLANUS
A diagnosis with lichen planus may come after a doctor performs a biopsy of affected tissue, a hepatitis C test, or various allergy tests. After a diagnosis with lichen planus, treatment options vary and are based on the severity of your case. For instance, if the lichen planus infection is in your mouth, you will treat it differently than if it is affecting your nails. Lichen planus treatment options include corticosteroids, antihistamines, light therapy, retinoids, immune response medicines, and topical creams.

What is Lichen Sclerosus?
An uncommon condition, lichen sclerosus typically affects the anal and genital regions in people, creating skin that is patchy and pale, whitish in color. Women who have reached menopause are at a higher risk of contracting the condition. Men and children are less likely to be affected. People with lichen sclerosus may not display any symptoms of the condition, moreover, the condition is not contagious.
There is no known cause of lichen sclerosus, but it is believed that it may be caused by hormonal imbalance or an overzealous immune system. Although there is no known cure for lichen sclerosus, soothing ointments or natural oils may help one alleviate the symptoms of the condition.
