Ringworm of the skin (also known as corporis) is an infection caused by a fungus. Ringworm is not caused by a worm. The kinds of fungi (plural of fungus) that cause ringworm live and spread on the top layer of the skin and on the hair. They grow best in warm, moist areas, such as locker rooms and swimming pools, and in people’s skin folds. Ringworm is highly contagious. It spreads when a patient has skin-to-skin contact with a person or animal that has it. It can also spread when a patient shares things like towels, clothing, or sports gear with other people. Patients can also get ringworm by touching an infected dog or cat, although this form of ringworm is not common. Ringworm of the skin usually causes a very itchy rash and it can affect various areas of the skin including the the feet, the groin, or the scalp. It is referred to as tinea pedis (or athlete’s foot), tinea cruris (or jock itch), or tinea capitis respectively. Ringworm is known as tinea corporis when it affects the skin in general. The ringworm rash often makes a pattern in the shape of a ring, but not always. Sometimes it is just a red, itchy rash. Jock itch is a rash in the patient’s skin folds of their groin. It may also spread to the patient’s inner thighs or buttocks. Ringworm of the hand looks like athlete’s foot. The skin on the patient’s palm or the hand gets thick, dry, and scaly. And skin between the fingers may be moist and have open sores.

Children and people who have pets are often at a higher risk of developing ringworm, as the infection can easily be passed from dogs or cats to humans. Fungal infections and ringworm can also be the result of moisture and sweat trapped on the skin, creating a fungus. Prevention of ringworm may be as simple as washing your hands frequently, especially after touching an animal, and practicing good hygiene, particularly after you have sweat a lot or been in a public place with many germs, like a swimming pool.
