What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a skin disorder characterized by raised, scaly patches on the skin. These patches are reddish, purple, dark brown or gray. They itch or burn and have silvery scales. The patches or plaques can arise anywhere on a person’s body, but they’re usually found on the elbows, the scalp, the lower back or the knees.
What Causes Psoriasis?
Doctors aren’t sure what causes psoriasis, but it’s believed to be an autoimmune disease. This means that the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks a bodily system. In the case of psoriasis, the body attacks the skin. Psoriasis is not contagious.

In psoriasis, skin cells grow too quickly. In a normal cycle, it takes about a month for a skin cell to rise from the bottom layer of the skin to the top. But in psoriasis, it takes only a few days for the skin cell to do this. On top of this, the cell clings to the top of the skin and doesn’t slough off the way skin cells usually do. This is what gives the plaques their silvery color.
What Does Psoriasis Look Like?
Plaque psoriasis has raised patches or plaques. In Caucasians, the borders are red and covered with those silver scales. The plaques in people of color are purplish or dark brown. Sometimes the plaques crack, bleed and can become infected. They can be coin sized or cover large areas of the body.
What is Plaque Psoriasis?
Plaque psoriasis is by far the most common type of psoriasis. As many as 90 percent of all people with psoriasis have this type of the disease. Sometimes people who get psoriasis for the first time mistake it for eczema, but when a bit of the skin is examined under a microscope, the skin cells are thicker and more inflamed.

Doctors classify plaque psoriasis as mild, moderate or severe. In mild psoriasis, the plaques cover fewer than 3 percent of the patient’s body. If the psoriasis is moderate, it covers from 3 to 10 percent. Severe psoriasis affects over 10 percent of the patient’s body.
How to Treat Psoriasis?
Though there are many treatments for psoriasis, many people prefer more gentle and natural ways to treat this disorder. Natural treatments include treating scalp psoriasis with apple cider vinegar.
